Dr. Mari Nygård
The Cancer Registry of Norway
Dr. Mari Nygård has been affiliated with the Cancer Registry of Norway (CRN) since 2001, and became Head of the HPV-related Epidemiological Research Unit, Senior Researcher, and Senior Medical Advisor of the Department of Research of the CRN in 2008.Her research focuses mainly on HPV infection and related cancers, including cervical cancer, and cervical cancer prevention. Dr. Nygård has also focused on the development of translational aspects to modernize traditional “one size fits all” preventive strategies by applying risk- stratified algorithms. In Norway, Dr Nygård actively contributes to shape cervical cancer prevention policy. Her efforts in the National expert groups for implementing HPV-based screening in Norway resulted in policy changes in 2015, when HPV-test started to replace cytology as a primary screening test in Norway. Internationally, Dr. Nygård participates in a collaboration between the pharmaceutical company MSD and the CRN to assess the long-term effect of HPV vaccines. Dr Nygård also has been consulting with public health policy makers for cervical cancer prevention-related issues in Estonia, Romania, and Ganzu, China; and since 2018, she is acting as an advisor to the World Health Organization to accelerate Cervical Cancer Elimination activities. In the same year, Dr. Nygård started actively contributing in the pan-European action against cancer, with the aim to provide European Union Member States with practical support for implementing concrete steps toward cancer control. Finally, Dr Nygård has been a keen advocate for increased access to biobanks and health registries in or der to accelerate biomedical research.
